Community Conversations
Community Conversations are facilitated group discussions that serve as an accessible introduction to suicide prevention. Designed for general audiences, these sessions explore why suicide prevention matters to everyone — not just clinicians or first responders — and help participants understand the role they can play in supporting someone who may be struggling.
Topics typically include recognizing warning signs, understanding how to start a supportive conversation, reducing stigma around mental health, and connecting people to local resources.
Community Conversations can be tailored to the specific audience — whether that's a workplace, faith community, school group, civic organization, or neighborhood gathering — making the content relevant and practical for the people in the room.
No prior training or experience is needed. Just a willingness to show up, listen, and learn how you can be part of the solution.
-
These conversations can be anywhere from 1-2 hours long
-
Cost: Free
-
Virtual and/or In-Person (In-Person Preferred)

Community Helper Trainings
HASPC's community helper trainings equip everyday people—parents, teachers, coaches, faith leaders, coworkers, and neighbors—with the skills to recognize the warning signs of suicide risk and connect someone to help. These are gatekeeper trainings: participants don't need a clinical background, just the willingness to step in when it matters. Through Ethan's Legacy Institute, HASPC offers several nationally recognized curricula, each suited to different audiences and levels of depth:
- QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) — Often called the "CPR for suicide prevention," this is a brief, high-impact training that teaches three simple steps anyone can use to recognize the warning signs of a suicide crisis and refer someone to help. It's ideal for large community audiences and can be delivered in under an hour.
- AS+K (About Suicide to Save a Life) — A 1.5–3 hour workshop designed for people who work with or interact with youth, adults, Veterans, and others who may be at risk, covering safe messaging, the basic epidemiology of suicide, and risk and protective factors. Participants practice identifying warning signs and language associated with elevated risk, learn how to directly ask someone if they're thinking about suicide, and are trained on connecting that person to clinical care or other resources, often through role play. It's a widely used, evidence-informed Texas program suited for schools, faith communities, and workplaces.
- Talk Saves Lives — Developed by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, this training gives a clear, research-backed overview of suicide prevention: risk factors, warning signs, and what protective factors and help-seeking look like at the community level. It's a strong entry point for groups wanting foundational knowledge.
- CALM (Counseling on Access to Lethal Means) — Focused specifically on reducing access to lethal means during a crisis, this training is often geared toward those working with at-risk individuals or their families, emphasizing practical, judgment-free conversations about safe storage.

LivingWorks Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training
LivingWorks Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training
LivingWorks Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) is a two-day, in-depth workshop designed for anyone who wants to feel more prepared and confident in helping someone at risk of suicide.
Whether you're a professional, community member, or simply someone who cares, ASIST teaches practical, evidence-based strategies to recognize warning signs, engage in meaningful conversation, and create a safety plan that supports life.
Participants walk away with life-saving skills and the ability to act as a vital connection for someone in crisis.
This training is especially valuable for those who are often the first to notice when something is wrong—friends, coworkers, educators, healthcare providers, first responders, and more.
