Ethan’s Legacy Institute (5)-1

Ethan’s Legacy Institute is an initiative created by HASPC to honor the life of Ethan, whose story reminds us of the urgent need for compassion, connection, and education around suicide prevention.

Grounded in his memory, this initiative will serve as a hub for training, resources, and community outreach designed to equip individuals, professionals, and organizations with the tools and skills they need to make a difference.

Ethan brought people together in life, and through this work, he’s still doing it. His legacy is one of connection, courage, and compassion. And together, we will carry that forward - turning heartbreak into hope...

one conversation, one skill, and one life at a time

Honoring Ethan Somwaru

Ethan was a light in the lives of so many—compassionate, funny, and a friend to all. Whether on the soccer field, in the classroom, or just being his goofy self, he had a gift for bringing people together and filling every space with laughter, love, and his signature bear hugs.

He lost his father to suicide at just 6 years old, and two weeks before his own passing, he lost his good friend the same way. Ethan carried deep pain, but also deep joy. He felt everything with intensity—his kindness, humor, and passion were unforgettable.

He was known for his quirks—wearing shorts in the winter, walking around in socks because he hated shoes, and starting spontaneous games with kids who adored him. He loved hard, argued playfully, and left behind little pieces of himself everywhere he went—sometimes literally.

Ethan was more than his loss. He was a beautiful soul who loved big, laughed often, and made sure everyone felt like they belonged. His absence is immeasurable, but so is the impact he made.

A Tiered Approach to Impact

Foundational

Accessible, community-based education that meets people where they are, designed for anyone.

Foundational

The Foundational Learning Tier offers entry points for communities to engage in meaningful, inclusive learning around suicide prevention, mental health, and healing after loss.

This tier focuses on accessible, community-based education that meets people where they are — emotionally, geographically, and culturally.

This tier is designed for anyone — whether you’re just beginning to explore these topics or looking for ways to support your community more intentionally.

No prior knowledge required, just a willingness to listen, learn, and lead with heart.

Focus: Awareness, understanding, and stigma reduction
Goal: Introduce core concepts, reduce stigma, and create an entry point for deeper engagement
Audience: General public, anyone interested
Tone: Conversational, accessible, community-centered

2
  • Community Trainings: Introductory workshops and suicide prevention basics — designed for workplaces, schools, faith communities, and neighborhood groups.
  • Storytelling: Facilitated workshops where individuals with lived experience share their stories of hope, healing, and resilience. These sessions honor the power of narrative and human connection to reduce stigma and inspire change.
  • Community Conversations: Small-group dialogues that create safe spaces for honest discussion around suicide, mental health, grief, and recovery. These conversations can be industry specific or generalized.
Applied Skills

Training for anyone including those in helping professions and high-impact sectors (not requiring clinical credentials).

Applied Skills

7
Focus: Practical, action-oriented training
Goal: Equip individuals with tools to directly intervene and support someone at risk
Audience: Anyone ready to learn life-saving skills — from community members to professionals
Tone: Interactive, hands-on, evidence-informed

The Skills-Based Tier provides hands-on, evidence-informed training for individuals ready to deepen their understanding and sharpen their ability to respond effectively to suicide risk.

Whether this is your first step into the work or a next step after foundational learning, these programs are designed to build competence and confidence.

This tier is open to everyone — community members, professionals, caregivers, educators, and anyone ready to learn life-saving skills.

Whether you're coming with lived experience, clinical expertise, or simply a desire to help, you’ll walk away with tools to make a real difference.

  • ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training): A two-day intensive that teaches participants how to recognize warning signs, engage someone at risk, and create a collaborative safety plan.
  • CALM (Counseling on Access to Lethal Means): A skills-focused training that teaches how to have informed, respectful conversations about reducing access to lethal means — particularly firearms — during times of crisis.
  • Other Specialized Trainings: Including topic and/or population focused, safeTALK, Mental Health First Aid (Advanced Modules), and more — each focused on practical, real-world application.
Specialized Training

Offers advanced, tailored learning for professionals, leaders, and organizations working in specific roles, systems, or communities.

Specialized Training

The Specialized Training Tier offers advanced, tailored learning for professionals, leaders, and organizations working in specific roles, systems, or communities. These sessions go beyond general awareness to help participants apply suicide prevention and postvention strategies in culturally relevant, professionally aligned, and system-informed ways.

Ideal for those with some baseline awareness or prior exposure to suicide prevention, these trainings are nuanced, practical, and often co-designed to meet the real-world needs of your team or community.

  • Custom Trainings by Request: We partner with organizations to co-design trainings that meet the specific needs of their field, audience, and culture — from law enforcement agencies to youth-serving nonprofits.
  • Clinical Suicide Prevention for Behavioral Health Providers: CEU-accredited sessions for clinicians focused on evidence-informed practices including risk assessment, collaborative safety planning, care transitions, and follow-up.
  • Culturally Responsive Suicide Prevention: Trainings designed to address the unique needs of vulnerable communities, veterans, and others disproportionately affected by suicide — centering lived experience, trust-building, and equity.
